Synopsis

It was recently reported that Tesco had announced that it was planning to reduce the number of suppliers it works with as part of the next phase of its Project Reset, which aimed to streamline its product range. Apparently, Tesco is planning a major review of its supplier base over the next two years, with the aim of “cutting the number of supplier partners and building up mutually beneficial long-term partnerships with key companies.”

The Grocer recently quoted suppliers referring to the impending Reset as a “cull”, “a tsunami”, which most suppliers are not yet getting ready for, and a future that “will be more difficult for smaller suppliers”. This means that for some suppliers, it isn’t about winning or losing 5 or 10% of their business, it could be about losing up to 100% of their business. It’s that serious.

This, we believe, will set a pattern that will be mirrored by other retailers across the grocery sector. The implication of this for suppliers – both branded and own-label suppliers – as part of their ongoing category management will be the urgent need for them to identify both the threats to and opportunities for their business, and what steps they need to take to defend themselves against delisting and put themselves in a powerful position to positively argue the case for new listings and more extensive distribution through insight-led, compelling selling propositions.

This paper will address a dual issue: what urgently needs to be done to protect range and distribution of existing products and, separately, how suppliers can prepare to sell in new products.

Ends.
